Today was a good day because today I got to dig.
On a fateful day in 2012, my uncle, who was probably just sick of hearing me yap, handed me his iPhone and let me play the new game he’s found. What game was it you might ask?
The game was Minecraft.
And ever since then, for the past 12 years, I have been ready for my day to dig. And by god, did I dig today. Our merry mix of miners embarked in the morning to join excavations at one of the sites in Olduvai gorge. There, people much better at digging than ourselves were uncovering what we were then told was a 1.5 million year old hippo, but we know now as I write this was actually a Sivatherium, or what is essentially a heavy metal giraffe.
We ourselves were placed on the exterior plots, those with smaller bones and stone tools, and we got to digging. That’s essentially it. We dug, and we dug, and I found so many bones and only broke one. And once I stopped freaking out about breaking it, I dug up more bones. Then we took a break when it got too hot, and then went back out and guess what? We dug again.
In short, about 50% of my life has built up to this day, and I could not be more pleased.
