Bye Bye Olduvai! Today is the day that we head out of Olduvai Gorge and make the journey all the way back to where this trip first started. Before we can get allllll the way back though, we first have to get all the way back to Nairobi, Kenya. If you’ve been roughly following the geography and route of this trip, we have only been getting further away from Nairobi since we came here, so this drive will be a doozy.
Early on in the ride, the prospects for a problem-free ride seemed high. Spirits were good (pictured) and the Land Cruiser was happy. However, as we continued on, trouble struck in the form of car issues. To give a quick synopsis, something in our engine was not right but we could still drive. The only caveat was our speed was capped at maybe 30mph and we could barely crawl if going uphill. I did not keep count but I was told we pulled over at least 11 times to give our engine the extra help it needed.
Despite all these troubles, we ended up making it to a mechanic on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim (pictured). It honestly felt like a cutscene from some famous video game. However, at the mechanic, we realized they did not have the means to fix our problem. So just like Thomas the Tank Engine, we kept chugging along and at some point we hit a gas station with conveniently named snacks (pictured).
After all of that, we made it to Arusha and had our transfer to a bus and much more smooth roads. We took this bus and drove until we crossed the border. From there we hit the final stretch of going to Nairobi, finally arriving sometime at 10pm. Our total transit time clocked in at around 14 hours. It was a very worthwhile story to tell, but I now need to find some rest before our 8 hour flight from Nairobi to Istanbul tomorrow morning.
